Moku O Keawe International Festival 2007

2nd Day: Hula Competition [ Hula Kahiko Division ]

Thursday was Hula Kahiko night at Moku O Keawe International Festival, and the audience was transported back in time through the ancient rhythms of authentic chant and dance. Halau from Tokyo and Kanagawa Japan, Paea, Tahiti and Volcano, Waikoloa and Kamuela on Hawaii's Big Island (Moku O Keawe) competed onstage in a thrilling and dramatic performance. Traditional costumes, made from natural materials, adorned the intensely-focused dancers, accompanied only by the beat of pahu (drum) and oli (chant). The exciting competition continues on Saturday with the final 'auana performances.
Spirits at tonight's spectacular hula competition were not the least bit dampened by an earlier shower.
