Hula Kahiko – Wahine
[ 1 ] Chant must be prior to and including 1893. Newly composed chants will be accepted but it must reflect the time period.
[ 2 ] The Ka’i and Ho‘i should be complimentary to the competition mele. The chants used for ka‘i and ho‘i should honor the deities of hula, the theme of the competition mele/ and adornments of nature. Newly composed chants are encouraged but should reflect the time period appropriate to the hula and the purpose and function of the ka‘i or ho‘i. Use of your halau chant/song for either the ka‘i or ho‘i are not allowed.
[ 3 ] Chosen Mele to be performed will be accepted on a first-come first serve basis. There will be no duplication of chosen mele. Submit first line of mele along with the title and interpretation of mele with Ha lau Application by September 30, 2007.
[ 4 ] Costumes and adornments shall be of the period (era).
[ 5 ] The Ho‘opa’a must be dressed in the costume of Kihei of ho‘opa‘a and will be judged on the overall performance (style of chant, grooming, posture, expression, and costume).
[ 6 ] Solid Black costumes are not permissible unless
trimmed with contrasting colors.
[ 7 ] Prizes: Cash Awards will be awarded accordingly: The highest combined scores of Hula Kahiko and Hula ‘auana Scores will be awarded in the Overall Category for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Hula 'auana – Wahine, Kupuna Wahine and Kupuna Wahine Soloist
[ 1 ] Mele from Kalakaua period to present day Hawai‘i is acceptable. There will be no duplications of mele. Mele will be accepted on a first come first serve basis. Submit first line of mele along with interpretation of Mele by September30, 2007.
[ 2 ] No Hapa Haole songs. However an English word or two within the lyrics is accepted.
[ 3 ] Musical accompaniment must be stringed instruments.
[ 4 ] No cellophane skirts, artificial flowers and/or leis are allowed.
[ 5 ] If there is a change of lei, due to weather or availability – please specify second choice.
[ 6 ] Solid Black costumes are not permissible unless
trimmed with contrasting colors.

Prizes: Cash Awards will be awarded accordingly:
Wahine Division: The highest combined scores of Hula Kahiko and Hula ‘auana Scores will be awarded in the Overall Category for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
Kupuna Wahine and Kupuna Wahine Soloist: Places 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Performance
Time Limit
Time Limit: There is a time limit of seven (7) minutes for all performance entries. The time starts from the first utterance of the words, or when the first dancer steps on to the stage, or when the music starts. The time stops when the last dancer is off the stage and/or when the ho‘opa‘a stops chanting, or when the music/singing stops. If performance exceeds seven minutes, five (5) points will be deducted for each minute of fraction thereof.

An Overall Award is presented this year by Tiffany’s to the 1st Place Hula Halau. It will held by the Overall Winners for the year and returned for next year’s presentation. Hula Halau receiving this Award consecutively for 3 years will be the keepers of this Distinguished Award for their continued effort to persevere, promote and preserve hula at its highest level of excellence.
